The weeks just before and after the summer peak are often the sweet spot for travel, and April and October are two of the best months for many destinations.
Comfortable weather
In the Mediterranean, spring brings mild days and blooming landscapes, while October still offers warm afternoons and a sea that has been heated all summer. Cities such as Rome, Athens and Istanbul are pleasant to walk in.

Better value and calmer sights
Hotels and flights are typically cheaper than in July and August, and popular sights are easier to enjoy. Restaurants have more tables, and locals have more time to chat.
Beyond Europe
In Japan, spring and autumn are the most scenic seasons, and in parts of Central and East Asia they are the most comfortable.

A small caution
Some seaside resorts, ferries and attractions operate limited schedules early or late in the season, so check timetables when you plan.
