Baku and the coast
Baku is known for its winds, the northerly khazri and the southerly gilavar. Summers are hot, often above 30°C, so bring light clothes, sunglasses and sun protection; winters are mild with temperatures often in single digits, so pack a warm jacket and a windproof layer.
The mountains
In Gabala, Quba and the high village of Khinalig, at around 2,350 metres, evenings can be cool even in summer. Take a fleece, sturdy shoes and a rain jacket.
Cultural touches
Comfortable shoes are important for the cobbled lanes of the Old City. When visiting mosques, cover shoulders and knees, and women are usually asked to cover their hair.
