Istanbul is only about three hours from Baku, and Azerbaijani citizens can visit visa-free, which makes it a perfect long-weekend city. Here is an easy plan for a first visit.
Day 1: the old city
Start early in Sultanahmet with Hagia Sophia and the six-minaret Blue Mosque, then step down into the atmospheric Basilica Cistern, built in the 6th century. After lunch, explore Topkapı Palace before browsing the covered lanes of the Grand Bazaar and the aromatic Spice Bazaar. End the day with a sunset view from the Galata Tower.

Day 2: water and neighbourhoods
Take a ferry or a Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü to see waterfront palaces and wooden mansions from the water. Visit Dolmabahçe Palace, stroll through Ortaköy, then climb through Balat’s colourful streets. If you have time, the Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by the architect Sinan, has one of the city’s best views.
Eat well
Begin each morning with a Turkish breakfast of cheeses, olives, eggs and fresh bread, and finish with baklava and a small glass of tea.

Tip
Dress modestly for mosque visits and check current opening arrangements for each site before you go.
Add Cappadocia or the Turquoise Coast to turn a city break into a full Türkiye holiday; we can arrange the flights and stays.
