Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most rewarding destinations, and a little early planning makes the visit smoother.
Entry and permits
Entry to the citadel is by timed ticket, and the Inca Trail has a limited number of daily permits that sell out well in advance. The classic trail closes for maintenance each February. Booking as early as possible gives you the widest choice of dates.
Altitude and comfort
Cusco lies at around 3,400 metres, while Machu Picchu sits lower at about 2,430 metres. Our itineraries include a gentle first day, coca tea and time in the Sacred Valley to help you adjust.
Best months
The dry season, from about May to September, offers the clearest skies, while the green season has fewer visitors.
